Solid State HF Generators

Solid state HF generators use semiconductor components to produce the high frequency power used in RF welding. They replace vacuum-tube power generation with a semiconductor-based design. Forsstrom uses this technology in selected HF welding configurations to control welding power and time for compatible thermoplastics. The generator powers the HF welding process, while the press and tooling shape the weld.

Solid State HF Generators

What materials can be welded with solid state HF power?

A solid state generator powers HF welding of compatible materials such as PVC and weldable thermoplastic polyurethane (PU/TPU). These may be films, coated fabrics or moulded components such as weldable eyelets. Material formulation, tooling, weld area and available power determine the suitable machine configuration.

Why use solid state HF generators?

Controlled welding power

Semiconductor-based HF power generation supports control of the energy delivered during welding. Power and time settings can be matched to the material, tooling and weld area.

Repeatable welding cycles

Defined power and time settings help reproduce the welding cycle. Together with suitable pressure, tooling and cooling, this supports consistent results across repeated operations.

No generator tube replacement

The HF power stage uses semiconductor components instead of a vacuum tube. This removes tube replacement from generator maintenance, while the generator and welding machine still require routine servicing.

Compact generator options

Forsstrom’s TR-0.6 is a compact solid state HF generator with built-in welding time and power control. Its format supports suitable small-weld applications and integration into compatible production setups.

Selected press configurations

Solid state generator options are available for selected Forsstrom presses, including CP8, CP9 and TP 120 configurations. Generator power, tooling and weld area must be matched to the intended application.

How does solid state HF welding work?

A solid state generator supplies the HF power within a five-step welding cycle.

1

Select the weld settings

Choose the welding power and time for the material, electrode and weld area.

2

Position and press the material

Place the material in the press. The electrode applies pressure to the intended weld area.

3

Generate solid state HF power

Semiconductor components generate the high frequency energy supplied to the welding tooling.

4

Heat and fuse the material

The electromagnetic field heats the compatible thermoplastic, allowing the pressed surfaces to fuse.

5

Cool and release the weld

HF power switches off. The joint cools under pressure before the press releases it.
